To spice up the soil monitoring program to include some of the more recent supernovas, of course with a bright and accessible in a region of sky that can target.


are many supernovae which portray in one night if you have a medium aperture telescope, time, and an unobstructed view of the entire sky. Automated searches are monopolizing the discoveries of these bursts in distant galaxies, sometimes making for a false impression of normality, to forget their extraordinary nature, the result of millions of years of nucleogénesis inside a star or gas accumulation around a white dwarf.

Every night may appear, in a faint galaxy if not for the efficiency of a CCD, and appeared in the UGC 9947, discovered by British amateur Tom Boles, a modest star that adorned the elliptical galaxy of magnitude 17. But beyond his hostess to an extent, and in a few days after the blast has risen above the sixteenth magnitude. The supernova brightness surpasses the galaxy that lives!

UGC 9947 is a distance of about 308 ± 22 million light years (inferred from their redshifts with a Hubble constant H 0 of 73 km / s / MPc). Posted distance of 10 parsec (32.6 light years), somewhat further than Vega of us, the supernova shine at magnitude -19, much more intense that the full moon.

Paradoxically (or cosmic caution), the most shocking events in the universe occur far from us as tiny specks of dust flashes lost in the depths of space.

V610 Herculis: a little mystery

V610 Herculis is one of a series of cataclysmic variable stars that I usually watch in the summertime. Every night or two nights usually take pictures of the fields in a dozen of these stars, and the next day by locating and photometric measurement of variable stars contained in the footage, using astrometric and FOCAS II.

Occasionally one of these cataclysmic decides to break the monotony and erupt, brightening about 4 to 5 magnitudes, making the image fits a star appears in the marked location, rather than a fund noisy as usual, when the variable remains in its resting state, with a magnitude so weak that is beyond the scope of my team of 200 mm aperture.

The latest star to "take note" Hercules was V610, which since the last observation, July 10, 2010, remained below 17.50V magnitude, and measuring the image on July 14 saw no problem variable, weak but well featured on the merits , 16.59V glossy as I could measure in the FOCAS II.

Thinking that at least for a few days V610 Her maximum magnitude would be visible, as is normal. But surprisingly, the night of 15 to 16 July was gone, had returned to the resting state, the weaker of the mag. 17.

Now the question is whether either the burst has been remarkably short, or just what I have detected in recent times. In the second case, also would result in a rash particularly short for what I usually do dwarf nova-like variables.
